Is There a Cosmic Funny Bone?
By Sioux Rose
Typical scientists approach their experiments with pre-conceived hypotheses. Data collected tends to support presumptive conclusions. Astrologers welcome genuine discovery. In the process of chart comparison, genuine surprises arise. Less surprising was noticing the influence of Mercury in the birth blueprints of respected comedians. This god, after all, is referred to as the trickster.
When researching birthdates and times, it turned out that five of my favorite comedians: Kristin Wiig, John Stewart, Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon all arrived on the earth plane leaving no trace of a birth hour. Without that data key factors linked to the cosmic funny bone could not be identified. Essentially, the best evidence for comedic cosmic concordance is found in the chart dials of those comic stars whose birth times are known. It comes down to where the planets are positioned in the great wheel.
Like a cosmic detective, I searched for common threads when I examined the fiber of the fifteen comedians’ charts. When a particular planetary signature showed up three or more times, it gained statistical significance.
I organized these celestial portraits starting with categories of note. Mercury immediately distinguished itself by showing up in the 10th house of six of these funny people! Nearly half our cast held Mercury in the role of jokester, master communicator, or shapeshifter.
In five charts, the sun showed up in the tenth house activating the promise that one marked by this bright signature would be being widely seen and recognized professionally. Tina Fey, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce and Dana Carvey all have both their sun and their Mercury in the 10th house. (Carvey’s sun closely conjoins the mid-heaven from his 9th house.)
In the majority of these charts, two or more prominent planets are found in either Gemini or Virgo—Mercury’s anointed kingdoms.
Four charts also make for statistical significance. And four comedians were born with their moons in the 4th house. This lends itself to the early development of imagination. Strangely, the sun-sign Taurus proved statistically significant since George Carlin, Carol Burnett, Tina Fey, and Jerry Seinfeld all were born under the imprint of the bull. Among honorable mentions without known birth times, Taurus native John Oliver weighs in as a fifth.
Could Venus be funnier than we give her credit for being?
Pluto, the ruler of the mysterious sign of Scorpio, holds legendary magnetic powers. Small wonder that four comedians were born with Pluto rising in their first houses while Robin Williams had Scorpio rising. Four others were born with the star-seeking sign of Leo rising.
Effervescent Uranus rises in the charts of four other members of our cast. Consider comedians’ bold manners of speech and the taboo topics they toss out of closets and you see Uranus at work. Think: Shock value.
Shared stellar imprints expressing through three comedians also bear mentioning, and three comedians hold Jupiter in their 11th houses. Three more have tight Sun-Mercury conjunctions while others have Sun and Mercury in the same zodiac sign sitting more than 8 degrees apart.
In three of our comic celebrity charts, the intuitive moon conjoins Neptune. A deviation on this theme is found in Mike Myers whose Neptuneconjoins his 4th house cusp from his 3 rd house. Where Neptune utilizes intrigue, Mercury acts as the Zodiac’s chameleon. When these two planets work synergistically in a birth chart, the combination gifts individuals with a capacity to replicate the voice, speech pattern, and gestures of others. Many comedians have this knack since they’re known for their impersonations.
With the groundwork in place, let’s review the birth blueprints of those who gift us with laughter. Since life is fraught with conflict Creator added Mercury to the Divine pantheon to offer mortals humor as an offset to abounding inanity.
The Mercury in the 10th house cosmic clan:
George Carlin: When one examines Carlin’s chart, his 10th house stands out. There Uranus sits at 10 degrees Taurus nearly conjunct Mercury at 19-degrees Taurus. With his sun closely conjoined with Mercury, the entire stellium lights up. This explains Carlin’s cool command of commentary along with his electric presence. He was born with a cosmic spotlight on him.
Noting Carlin’s Pluto in his 12th house of karma, and recognizing the philosophical nature of his comic references, clearly, this was not Carlin’s first go-round as the kingdom’s fool and truth-teller. His nodes lend weight to this thesis. Carlin’s north node at 15-degrees Sagittarius catalyzed the calling of the teacher-philosopher. His south node at 15-degrees Gemini conjoined his moon at 21-degrees Gemini. Chiron, the wounded healer, also sat smack on his moon. Carlin’s soul had a mission to illuminate the human condition by holding up a mirror through which modern individuals could see themselves.
His charged nodes energized the Zodiac’s axis of communication. Both squared his Neptune. The moon’s nodes hold clues to prior incarnations and suggest where learning has accumulated and where the soul requires new growth. Carlin’s Neptune, retrograde in Virgo showed his penchant for specificity. He was a keen examiner of words and devised comedy routines that exposed the odd contradictions inherent to colloquial expressions. He took language apart to reconstruct it. In the process, he shed light on assumptions built into language frames, themselves.
Lenny Bruce: This Infamous nightclub comedian tested the boundaries of censorship and good taste in a more modest era. Born with Sun conjunct Mercury in Libra, his 10th house, Bruce would naturally define himself as a communicator and be naturally seen and heard. Where he ran into trouble is explained by Pluto in his 7th house forming a square to his sun Mars Libra midpoint. Mythology relates that Pluto governs the underworld and presides over matters kept secret. Bruce loved to talk openly about sex before other comedians dared do so. To his detriment, the sexual revolution had yet to explode. Thus when Bruce shared his saucy commentary with conservative l950s Leave It to Beaver audiences, a clarion call went out to the strict censors of his era. Raunchiness cost him his career.
Bruce marched to his own drummer with Uranus positioned in his 3 rd house of communications. It formed a fateful Yod–two planets forming a sextile with both quincunx the “access” planet. Bruce’s Mercury at 24-degrees Libra formed a sextile to his Neptune at 24-degrees Leo. Both formed a quincunx to his Uranusat 22-degrees Pisces. He didn’t understand the limits imposed by the self-appointed guardians of collective morality.
Add in the strength of Bruce’s 8th house where his Leo north node would have him seek celebrity through bringing 8th house matters—like sex—to life, and the themes his brief life embodied were largely baked into the cosmic cake. His purity-seeking Moon Virgo might further explain his fascination with all things taboo.
Dana Carvey: Dana’s chart begins with Virgo rising giving Mercury direct influence over his life plan. Mercury, found in his 10th house assured that he’d stand out as a communicator. Adding fire to the equation is Mars also placed in Dana’s 10th house. His Gemini-sun fell in his 9th house to activate the archetype of the teacher-philosopher. Truly, a life focus on communications emerged. The 9th house also connotes the priest or holy man. Dana Carvey often imitated the church lady on SNL.
Typically, it’s during authoritarian times that the fool gets to tell the king–and kingdom–difficult, unwelcome truths. The same info that might warrant the official messenger’s head goes down differently when administered through the medicine of humor. Like George Carlin, Dana’s nodes activated the signs of Sagittarius-Gemini: the Zodiac’s communication axis.
One thing that surprises from Dana’s chart is his Moon at 11-degrees Scorpio conjoined with his Saturn at 16-degrees of Scorpio. This combination makes for cynicism and tends to look at the dark underbelly (Scorpio = Pluto = Hades) of the human experience. This Moon-Saturn pairing opposes Dana’s Venus. The pattern suggests a lack of popularity. Yet Dana is popular apart from the strict Evangelical community which probably doesn’t resonate with his version of the Church Lady. True to his mutable Sun/Mercury, Virgo rising, and Mercurial nodes Dana is endowed with a chameleon’s capacity to take on other personae. He’s best remembered for his presidential impersonations and Wayne’s World sidekick, Garth.
Will Ferrell: In Will’s chart, Mercury stands alone in his 10 th house. In Cancer, it’s retrograde. Will’s Cancer sun occupies his 11 th house. Magnetic Pluto rises in Virgo where it’s conjoined with Uranus, the electric planet that wields a built-in capacity to stun. Ferrell arrived at the tail-end of a rare conjunction that joined Uranus with Pluto in Virgo. Uranus enables open minds to tap into the full knowledge pool of mankind, i.e. the collective consciousness. This asset is a gift for anyone committed to the communication arts. With Uranus rising in his chart in union with Pluto, Ferrell presents a formidable image to the world. Uranus-Pluto both rise in Virgo and Mercury occupies Will’s 10th house. His chart depicts a master critic who‘s verbally equipped to share scathing insights. Like Dana Carvey, Mr. Ferrell has a Scorpio Moon. In his case, it’s closely conjoined with Neptune, the planet of imagination. The Moon, given to phases, is a natural shapeshifter and this aptitude is significantly enhanced by Neptune, the planet of dreams, illusion, and camouflage. The downside to Moon-Neptune is the tendency to nurse mood- swings with drugs or alcohol. Since Neptune is the natural governor of the 12th Zodiac sign Pisces, and closes the circle, discernible boundaries defuse. The recipient may not know when enough is enough. Thus the combo lends itself to addiction. Its trine to Ferrell’s Cancer Sun shows the ease with which he taps into the feelings of his audience. He’s a natural empath.
Where Gemini-Virgo planets intellectually identify with other persons, the Moon-Neptune merger operates on the plane of feelings. The sentience delivered from planets in the water element differs from the awareness generated from planets occupying the air element.
Venus Virgo in Will’s 12th house suggests that certain pleasure-seeking activities can lead to shoot-the-self in the foot outcomes. Virgoimprints incline towards self-criticism. When a person sees his own foibles, he’s better equipped to joke about odd behaviors in others.
Tina Fey: Star quality is often a given with Leo rising. Ms. Fey holds both the sun, ruler of Leo, and Mercury prominently placed in her career-oriented 10th house. Her sun and Mercury take part in a dynamic trio. The stellium starts with Mercury at nearly 14 degrees Taurus with Saturn sitting precisely on that same Taurus degree. Tina’s sun falls just outside this conjunction at 27-degrees Taurus. It makes sense that Ms. Fey would parody powerful politicians given the nature of her 10th house planetary personae. She was born to be seen and heard thanks to this trio. And since Saturn is at home in the 10 th house, Tina’s celebrity fate links up with authority figures: Think Sarah Palin.
Allotting language arts and quick delivery, Tina’s birth Mars sits at 20-degrees Gemini (in her 11th house) closely conjoined with her Venus at 25-degrees Gemini. The sign’s twins manifested metaphorically in the form of Sarah Palin, Tina’s television prime-time twin. Thanks to her physical likeness and gift for mimicry, Tina’s career took off. People commented that Tina Fey was born to play Sarah Palin.
Further favoring comedic communication, Tina’s south node falls in Virgo near her Pluto. Tina’s congenial nature has won wide favor thanks to her Moon at 25-degreesLibra conjoined with lucky Jupiter at 28-degrees Libra. Both her Mercury and Jupiter (symbolic rulers of the Gemini- Sagittarius communication axis) are retrograde. This reflects a cosmic do-over. Plausibly, Tina worked her way into significant communication venues in a previous incarnation but didn’t quite complete the mission.
Her sun located at 27-degrees Taurus directly opposes her Neptune at 29-degrees 35 minutes Scorpio. Although Taurus, as a fixed sign, is less malleable than its mutable cousins… the perpetual interaction generated by this opposition would diffuse fixed boundaries and allot the shapeshifting that many comediennes readily deploy.
Mike Myers: Born with the star-shining sign of Leo rising (in cosmic company with Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy, and George Carlin), the incredibly funny, Mercurial Mike Myers has his 4-degree Gemini sun placed in his 10th house with Mercury not far off at 23 degrees of Taurus, retrograde.
Not only does Mike’s chart feature magnetic, powerhouse Pluto prominently placed in his first house, this mysterious planet acts as part of a trio that includes Mars at 26-degrees Leo and Uranus situated at 1-degrees Virgo. This grouping is a powerhouse! One can only imagine the lengths this soul would have gone to, to get attention as a child! The urge to showcase his talent couldprove overwhelming. Given Mike’s empty 4 th house marked by inscrutable Scorpio on its cusp, he probably had to resort to ever-amusing antics to win the attention of distant parents. Dream-plane Neptune placed nearby at 14-degrees of Scorpio conjoins his 4th house cusp. This grants the god of imagination major influence over Mike’s early home life. No doubt he imagined himself the various personae he brought to life on Saturday Night Live.
Along with Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy, Mike’s wounded healer Chiron occupies his 7th house. Older souls who understand sorrow may feel called to alleviate it through the use of humor, its antidote. Mike’s Chiron in Pisces works like an empathy sponge. He may unwittingly absorb others’ sorrow, a tendency strengthened by his natal moon in sensitive Cancer. It’s this capacity to feel what others feel that allots him the capacity to assume a diverse array of hilarious characters. He’s the living embodiment of human archetypes! Experiencing the changing moods of the human experience fulfills the curriculum required by his north node in Cancer. The lesson is to embrace the spectrum of emotions that human flesh is heir to.
Chris Rock is a relative to this group since he also was born with his Sun conjunct Mercury. However, in his case, the pair occupies Aquarius, his 11th house. This combo turns Chris into a high-energy electric dynamo. Check out the speed and delivery of his often scathing, laser truths! His audience has to raise its IQ just to keep up with him!
Where Sun and Mercury often make prominent showings in other comic celebrities’ 10th houses, Chris has Venus placed in his 10 th house at 29 degrees, 37 minutes of cynical Capricorn. He’s quick to pick up on the injustices of the world and how political systems maintain them.
Mutable planets prominent in the charts of comedians also prove notable in Chris’ birth blueprint. His Virgo Moon at 16-degrees conjoins his Pluto at 18 degrees Virgo and his Uranus at 19 degrees Virgo. The rare, once-a-century merger between Uranus and Pluto occurring in a Mercurial sign played a major role in the development of computer technology and the Internet. Given the international nature of modern celebrity, Chris’ acerbic messages are relayed across a global mass media. Since these three Virgo planets occupy his 6th house, the critical tendencies associated with Virgo become energized. Chris’s Aquarian sun is very close to his combust Mercury. The levels of energy passing through his nervous system could lead to burnout. Hopefully, Mr. Rock pays attention to his diet since these sixth house planets make him a good candidate for nervous exhaustion.
Chris’ Jupiter is found in Gemini which puts the planet of wealth, luck, and opportunity in the sign of quick-wittedness. Chris’ north node is also in Gemini indicating that this lifetime’s karmic purpose centers upon acting as a messenger. Who can deliver difficult-to-digest truths more smoothly than the modern world’s version of the court jester?
We change gears now since the following celebrity comics have no planets in their 10th houses! This shortlist includes Jimmy Fallon, Phil Hartman, and Carol Burnet. Who can explain it? What does show up in the case of these individuals are powerful stelliums positioned elsewhere.
Carol Burnett’s chart holds a major stellium in her 6th house. This grouping includes Mars at 2- degrees Virgo, her south node at 5-degrees Virgo, Neptune at 7 degrees, 32 minutes Virgo, and Jupiter at 13 degrees, 35 minutes Virgo. No doubt a consummate perfectionist, Ms. Burnett regarded her performances as work… perhaps of a therapeutic nature. Ms. Burnett’s 2 nd house is also packed with planets starting with her Sunat 5 degrees, 42 minutes Taurus conjoined with Venus at 6 degrees 57 minutes Taurus. Her Moon–in the sign of its exaltation—sat at 24 degrees Taurus next to Chiron at 27 degrees of Taurus. This combination virtually assured financial stability, if not fiscal success.
Strangely, Ms. Burnett’s chart featured an empty 10th house—typically the sector that demarcates success, fame, wide recognition, and rise in life status. Also, Carol’s 7th house was devoid of planetary placements. Electrifying Uranus, however, rose in her first house as did talkative Mercury, the planet that endows comedians with their ready flow of words. Most tap into a virtual communication pipeline.
The planets packed into Carol’s money-making 2 nd house also formed trines to the planets found in her 6th house of work. With Sun, Venus, Moon, Mars, Neptune, and Jupiter all involved in this fortunate arrangement, perhaps it could be said that career success was assured to Ms. Burnett.
Key planets showing up in Virgo point to individuals endowed with critical acumen. Quite a bit of
comedy mocks aspects of life that others take for granted or never examine.
Phil Hartman, whose 10th house was empty, held two other packed chart sectors. His 7th house held a tight Venus—at 17 degrees Leo, Pluto–near 16 degrees Leo conjunction. Saturn was also present, sitting at just under 1-degree Virgo. His other packed chart sector was his 8th house where his Libra sun sat at 1 degree, 42 minutes not quite conjunct Neptune at 12 degrees Libra. His Mercury was placed at 27 degrees, 43 minutes of Libra. Mr. Hartman’s chart reads like boilerplate astrology in that true to Venus-Pluto occupying his marital sector, it was his wife who took his life in a storm of heated delirium.
Phil’s Mars placed at 14 degrees Scorpio formed a hard square to the Venus-Pluto pairing pointing to potentially lethal levels of sexually-based jealousy. So where does Mr. Hartman’s funny bone come from? Electric Aquarius rising granted Uranus–positioned in his 5th house of show biz–the governing role over Phil’s chart, and therefore, his life. His Leo 7th house lent celebrity quality to his interactions with people. While the Libra sun inclines towards logic and diplomacy,it was Phil’s Gemini Moon that animated his gift for comedy. His imaginative, intuitive Neptune formed a trine to his moon. The ensuing interactions between mutable Neptune and the ever-changing moon enabled Phil to assume the personae of more than sixty recognizable characters! He was amazing and is deeply missed.
Jimmy Fallon’s chart starts with mutable Pisces rising. Neptune, the chart’s governor is placed at 7 degrees Sagittarius conjoined with his North Nodeat 13-degrees Sagittarius. When key natal planets occupy the 9th house, they designate individuals destined to share knowledge and broaden the thought processes of others. This can be done through academics, publishing, religion, philosophy, or less conventional venues like late-night TV talk show hosting!
Along with Phil Hartman and Carol Burnett, Jimmy’s natal chart shows a packed 7th house and an empty 10th house. Following the tradition of Johnny Carson, Jimmy’slate night TV persona is incredibly congenial. He seems to relate to every viewer on a one-to-one basis. That’s because of Jimmy’s 7th house Venus sitting at 14-degrees Virgo. His sun is placed at 26 degrees, 35 minutes Virgo with Pluto at 6 degrees of Libra. Mercury, at 20-degrees Libra widely conjoins Uranus found at 26-degrees Libra. Whenever Mercury and Uranus join forces insights fire up. Emitted rapidly, they can even surprise their source! Jimmy’s Saturn at 17 degrees of Cancer (a sign of its detriment) sits in his fifth house. Strangely, deviating from the fate of most people marked by this signature, Jimmy didn’t have to wait long for celebrity stardom or success. Perhaps his good timing is attributable to the perfect trine formed between
his Moon at 17- degrees Scorpio and you can’t hurry love Saturn found at 17 degrees of Cancer.
The following chart profiles deviate from the pattern and pose other anomalies. This group includes Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, and Jerry Seinfeld. Robin Williams had Venus in his 10th house while Lily Tomlin’s 10th house contains Moon conjunct Jupiter with Saturn also present. The tenth house typically designates careers of distinction. Eddie Murphy has zip, zero, nada in his 10th house!
Lily Tomlin’s chart starts with Cancer rising and the moon, her chart ruler, placed in her 10th house near 4-degrees of Aries conjunct lucky Jupiter at 7 degrees Aries. Saturn also occupies her 10th house at 0 degrees 58 minutes Taurus is closely conjoined with her south node. The karmic implication is that Lily held a prior position of authority that may have entailed responsibility for others’ food, housing, or security needs. Currently, Ms. Tomlin is a major contributor to charitable organizations that feed the hungry.
Lily has an active 3 rd house which holds Venus at 6 degrees 41 minutes Virgo is closely conjoined with her sun at 7 degrees 56 minutes Virgo. Like its Gemini cousin, Virgo shares rule by the winged god Mercury, deemed the planet of wit, conversation, and clever communication. The pair extends the gift of language arts. Lily’s Neptune, the bearer of imagination, widely conjoins her 4th house cusp. This suggests an intuitive nature that lends itself to broad imaginative musings which no doubt began at a tender age.
Endowed with palpable magnetism, Lily has Pluto rising at 2 degrees of Leo. Given the nature of our polarity planet, perhaps females marked by the natal moon in their 10th house wield the same propensity for fame and wide recognition as males whose suns occupy their 10th house. (More research would be needed to prove or disprove the thesis.)
Like Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor’s chart also holds the moon, rather than the sun, high in the career-oriented tenth house. His chart features two packed houses: Pryor’s 7th house held Neptune at 27 degrees of Virgo along with his north node at 9 degrees of Libra. Venus was placed in his 7th house at 6 degrees of Scorpio tightly conjoined with Mars—which sits just over the 8th house border—at 7 degrees of Scorpio.
Richard’s 2nd house (like Lily Tomlin’s) is packed with Taurus planets. The list includes the rare, once-in-20 year conjunction between planetary antitheses, Jupiter (at 7 degrees Taurus) and Saturn (at 9 degrees Taurus). Plus Uranus was positioned at 23 degrees 35 minutes Taurus with the entire trio retrograde! Looks like Mr. Pryor got a second chance to create income from a venue that didn’t quite come to fruition in a prior incarnation. The Jupiter-Saturn Taurus duo directly opposed his Venus-Mars Scorpio coupling. With this internal dialog (the product of powerful planetary oppositions) perpetually underway in Pryor’s birth blueprint, it’s no wonder that he took to the stage to find an outlet for the interior debates he likely wrestled with.
Richard’s Sagittarius sun was placed in his 9th house specifying the type of individual born to speculate philosophically about this thing called life. His chart held the imaginative sign of Pisces rising. Its ruler, Neptune, sat directly opposite his ascendant from its placement on the cusp of his 7th house. Mutable signs being malleable lend themselves to the impersonation of others.
Next up is Taurus native, Jerry Seinfeld who, like Richard Pryor, was born with Pluto in his 5th house of show biz occupying the celebrity sign of Leo. Jerry’s Taurus rising put the sun in his first house.
Naturally, he stamped his personal mark on all things. Small wonder that the TV show that put his name on the celebrity map was all about his truly negotiating the banalities of ordinary life. One episode even had George trying to sell a TV show about nothing to potentially interested producers.
Venus, ruler of his Taurus ascendant sits in his first house on the first degree of loquacious Gemini. Jupiter is found in his 2 nd house at 25degrees Gemini with Uranus, the planet of wild expressions located in Jerry’s 3 rd house at 19 degrees of Cancer. Uranus livens up the 3 rd house with a unique, if not shocking communication style.
Often when an individual’s natal sun opposes Saturn, they grapple with continuous challenges. The sun in hard angle to Saturn brings to mind the myth of Sisyphus and suggests the individual who’s constantly forced to push the rock up the hill. Perhaps because Jerry’s Mars, exalted in Capricorn, forms a sextile to Saturn, the pressure of heavy karma was lifted from his birth map.
Jerry’s imaginative Moon found at 20 degrees Pisces conjoins his 12th house cusp. Due to length restrictions, I had to cut those on the funny bone list whose charts feature this particular 12th house activation point. It likely ties in with their ability to touch many lives.
Kin to Eddie Murphy, Jerry’s chart lacks sun, moon, and/or Mercury in the keynoted tenth house. Jerry’s North node is conjunct his 10th house cusp.
Robin Williams held magnetic Scorpio as his rising sign signature with its governor, Pluto placed at 18 degrees, 49 minutes Leo in his 9th house, albeit conjunct his Leo mid-heaven. Robin’s comedy routines revealed profound things about human beings and the human condition. It could be said that this funny man–with his chart ruler posited in the 9th house–was a philosopher, at heart.
Robin’s sun at 28-degrees Cancer also occupied his 9th house. Additionally, Robin’s Mercury, the winged messenger fell in his 9th house. At 22 degrees Leo, it was situated smack on his mid-heaven enabling his words to leave their mark on the collective consciousness.
Hidden in Robin’s 8th house was an electrifying duo composed of Uranus at 10 degrees, 50 minutes Cancer conjoined with Mars at 11 degrees, 55 minutes Cancer. For those astrologers who view Mars as the true ruler of Scorpio, finding the ascendant ruler in the 8 th house in close proximity to Uranus explains his sudden, unexpected demise.
Robin’s profound empathy came largely from his Moon at 9 degrees Pisces closely conjoined with his North Node at 10 degrees, 31 minutes Pisces. Capturing this influence, a gifted poet with his own Pisces moon wrote: “Sweep up all the broken hearts and pour them into me.”
Mr. Williams indeed held the world’s sorrow in his heart. The incredible compassion displayed in the character of the altruistic doctor in patch Adams and the psychologist in Good Will Hunting provides a window into Mr. William’s soul. With Scorpio rising, Moon/north node in Pisces, and three planets in Cancer, Mr. Robins was born to feel it all: the total emotional spectrum that human flesh is heir to. At times it proved too much… which led to his well-known bouts of depression. As a comedy artist, few have given more to the world in the way of therapeutic laughter.
Last on our list is Eddie Murphy whose chart shows no planet in his 10th house. Recognized for his star quality the instant he stood on the Saturday Night Live audition stage, what Eddie lacks in his 10th house he makes up for in a packed first house. Naturally, it’s Leo, the sign of stardom that rises, and the first planet to pack its electric punch is Uranus positioned at 21 degrees, 56 minutes Leo. If there’s anything that stands out about Eddie Murphy it’s his readiness to shock audiences with often audaciously lewd sexual material. Eddie’s north node sits in the first house at 5 degrees, 40 minutes Virgo where it’s tightly joined with Pluto, the planet of palpable magnetism, positioned at 5 degrees, 50 Virgo.
When a planet is aligned with the north node it points to an individual’s life or Soul purpose. Virgo is the sign domain of teachers, healers, critics, and fixers. Most comedians are critics at heart. After all, they point out foibles in human beings and mock the often ridiculous protocols we live by.
The quality of imagination found in the charts of other notable comedians also shows up in Eddie’s tight Moon-Neptune conjunction. Both are found in his 4th house. As previously related, Will Ferrell’s chart holds Moon conjunct Neptune; Mike Myer’s chart holds Neptune conjunct his 4th house cusp; Robin William’s chart holds Moon Pisces in the 4th house, and Lily Tomlin’s shows Neptune conjunct the 4th house cusp (from its placement in her 3 rd house).
The 4th house relates to early childhood and what is experienced in the home sphere during the developmental years. Five of the fifteen charts examined show Neptune’s strong imprint since imagination is a key component of humor. Like a mathematician, the comedian must construct visual equations that lead to full-scale hilarity.
Eddie’s Sun placed at 13 degrees, 45 minutes Aries sits in his 9th house just short of a conjunction with his Venus at 25 degrees Aries. Here again, we see the mark of a philosophical nature. The 9th house supports the persona of the professor, priest, rabbi, medicine man, or gifted communicator. From this sampling, we’ve noted both striking patterns and surprising deviations. Just as there are twelve Zodiac signs, there may be twelve species of humor.
If I missed mentioning your favorite comic, check their data (via logging birth date info in at: www.astro.com) and see if it comports with the chart features of celebrities mentioned. And if you know someone who holds one or more of the chart elements found in the birth blueprints of these masters of hilarity, you just may have discovered a person endowed with an authentic cosmic funny bone!
